DCYF’s Annual Grantee Survey for FY 2018-19 was sent to all DCYF grantees in May 2019 and primarily focuses on grantee feedback about interactions with DCYF staff. In addition, questions on DCYF’s planning process and commitment to advancing equity were included in the FY2018-2019 survey to support work in these areas. DCYF is committed to using the results of the Grantee Survey as a tool in guiding its policies and practices towards continuous improvement. Survey responses around satisfaction with the various teams at DCYF will be used to inform each team’s plan for improvement in their respective areas.

In November of 2014 the SF Children & Youth Fund was reauthorized through the year 2041 by nearly 75% of the San Francisco electorate. The reauthorization included an increase to the Fund and an expansion of services, resulting in a 40% increase in DCYF’s total investment between FY13-18. This report details how DCYF allocated the Children & Youth Fund between FY13-18 and the new services and initiatives that DCYF funded as a result of the reauthorization.

In 2016, DCYF awarded its first rounds of pilot grants designated for TAY-serving organizations throughout San Francisco. The first round of pilot grants began in February 2016 and included a five-month planning period; the second round of grants began in July 2016. The goal of this evaluation report was to help DCYF, service providers, and other stakeholders learn more about what high-quality TAY services look like and—in light of DCYF’s long-term funding commitment to TAY—to inform DCYF’s ongoing support for this population.
DCYF’s Annual CBO Satisfaction Survey for FYs 2013-2017 included questions for DCYF-funded CBOs regarding their satisfaction with DCYF’s contract management and support, training and technical assistance, grantee support, communication and outreach efforts, and planning efforts and initiatives. A total of 1,044 CBO staff completed the survey over the five-year funding cycle.
Free and publicly-funded summer programs provide safe spaces for youth to play, learn, and grow. These programs help reduce summer learning loss by incorporating activities that allow children to practice academic skills taught during the school year. Between 2013 and 2017, DCYF invested $27.3 million in our Out of School Time service area, funding 106 summer programs at 47 agencies for children in grades K-8.
In 2015 City of San Francisco established the Young Adult Court (YAC) model, an alternative court program designed for youth ages 18-25. The model was designed to address the needs of San Francisco’s vulnerable young adults by providing participants with access to wraparound services, job referrals, case management services and other supports. In the spring of 2015, DCYF contracted with Social Policy Research Associates to conduct a three-year evaluation of the YAC. This reports weaves together information from multiple data sources to provide a description of the planning, implementation and initial two years of YAC programming.
The San Francisco Wellness Initiative is a groundbreaking program dedicated to improving the health, well-being and academic success of the city’s 16,000 public high school students at 19 campuses. In safe, confidential settings, experts in adolescent health at onsite Wellness Centers help teens gain the skills they need to cope with complex issues such as stress, trauma, suicide, bullying, depression, self-esteem, drug and alcohol use, sexual health and relationships. Students learn positive, lifelong habits that contribute to their well-being and success, and ultimately, to the health of the communities in which they live.
The Wellness Initiative is the only school-based program for adolescent health and wellness of its kind. The Initiative is made possible through a unique partnership between DCYF, the SF Department of Public Health, and the San Francisco Unified School District. By leveraging the resources of each agency, student health is addressed from a citywide perspective.
This report summarizes the results of the 2016 Student Activities, Programs & Services Survey, which was administered to middle and high school students in SFUSD to help inform DCYF’s Services Allocation Plan. DCYF collaborated with SFUSD to survey students about their interest in and access to various activities and programs. The report describes the overall results of the survey and includes summary results by respondent grade level, sex, and race/ethnicity.
